27th September, 2016

Despite having only one week of break before an avalanche of exams and assessments, we decided that a well deserved day of rest was much needed. Holding a joint LAN at WangYu Cafe with BlizzSoc and DotASoc, we had many prizes to give away as well as a VR showcase (oooOooh!) from our sponsors at Gigabyte Xtreme Gaming.

[EVENT RECAP] SEMESTER 2 MIDSEM BBQ 2016

September 15, 2016

Despite some mishaps and problems experienced early on, we held our second BBQ of the semester on a VERY windy day. As it was during the latter half of the semester when everyone would be 'studying very hard', we didn't see as many of you but for those who came, we're glad you took some time to come hang with us!

We also showed a sneak peak of our very own UNSW LoLSoc hoodies, perfect for the ever turbulent Sydney weather so keep an eye out on our store page!

[EVENT RECAP] SEMESTER 2 BOARD GAMES AND SOCIAL NIGHT 2016

[EVENT RECAP] SEMESTER 2 BOARD GAMES AND SOCIAL NIGHT 2016

2nd September, 2016

Taking a break from our usual Friendly Fridays, we held our very first board games night on a Friday instead(c-c-c-combo breaker!). Whilst you were a board game elitist or very new to the idea of board games other than Monopoly or Cluedo, we were glad at the amount of people who came and brought their own favourite board games! From One Night to 7 Wonders and even Munchkin, it seemed that everyone had a blast getting acquainted with  the games and even with other members.

Certainly, we hope that no-one was board during the night but we did see some members getting floored in their games. Hopefully, their salt levels have returned to an acceptable level :P.

[EVENT RECAP] SEMESTER 2 WELCOME BACK BBQ 2016

AUGUST 17, 2016

To start off Semester 2 with some bang(ers) for your buck, we held a BBQ as usual. Now forget about 'sausage party' because we held a real sausage fest for this one! We had Inferno Diana skins to give away for the first 40 people who knew the special code (hint: it was in the newsletter!) as well as Red Bull and iced tea to make it a real par-tea!

We saw many keen beans already ready in line before our starting time at 12pm and the skins were quickly taken. Hopefully by now, we've mastered our art of cooking and everyone had a great time catching up!

Also a quick congratulations to our Uni Games team for winning the Eastern Uni Games. Well done guys!!

[EVENT RECAP] OPL SPLIT 2 VIEWING PARTY 2016

AUGUST 13, 2016

As another OPL season heads to a close, Chiefs and Legacy battled it out for one last time this year at the OPL Split 2 finals. However this time, the OPL 'legacy' Raydere and Legacy's Raes, swapped to their opposing team to pave the way for an exciting close to the season.

As usual, we helped Riot hold their official viewing party at Hoyts cinemas where we saw faithful fans rush in to cheer on their favourite teams to win the split and for a chance to qualify for Worlds. However, history proved to repeat itself as the Chiefs secured a steady win 3-0 over Legacy, advancing to the IWCQ.

Thank you to everyone who came to this event as we hope you enjoyed our intermission entertainment provided by our MC Ross 'Roscosity'.

[EVENT RECAP] FF LIVE AND GIRLS LAN SEMESTER 1 BREAK 2016

JULY 11, 2016

During the winter semester break, we held two LAN events to prove that we didn't forget you all! Our first one was a live Friendly Friday event held at WangYu Internet cafe where we hoped that you could now put a face to the summoner names seen every Friday. Similar to the online sessions, we held custom games so the members could interact and get to know each other better.

We also debuted a 'never done before event' where we catered for the lovely female members of the society with a Girls LAN to promote the female players to get to know each other without the usual sausage fest.

Thank you to everyone who did come and hopefully you can give us feedback on these events or future events you want to see!

[EVENT RECAP] MSI FINALS VIEWING PARTY 2016

MAY 15, 2016

It would be an understatement to say that the first international showdown event of the season was not met by excitement. We teamed up with Riot once again to help host their MSI Finals Viewing Part at Hoyts Broadway. The six best teams of each region (NA, EU, LPL, LCK, LMS and the International Wildcard Winner) competed against each other, head-to-head but the hype was real with the underdogs CLG making it through to the finals to contest against the omnipotent champions SK Telecom T1.

Even though everyone was riding on the CLG hype train, unfortunately they were swept by SKT T1 3-0, but it was heartwarming to see that they made it this far despite being in rough waters during the beginning of the split.

We hoped that during this event, you all shared the ups and downs of the game with everyone around you (and the thunderstick banging) and were entertained by our MC of the night Roscosity.

[EVENT RECAP] OCEANIC UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIP 2016

[EVENT RECAP] OCEANIC UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIP 2016

APRIL 30, 2016

During the past month, Riot hosted the Oceanic University Championship (OUC) of Semester 1 where teams had to compete against more than 60 university teams across Oceania. Teams had to pass the qualifier rounds at their local universities to proceed to the Regional level and then succeed at Nationals in order to play in the Grand Finals to be crowned Oceanic's University Champion.

At UNSW, we held our qualifiers for Upper and Lower divisions on the 2nd and 3rd of April with live finals at WangYu Internet Cafe. We had 8 brave teams battling it out in our Lower  division brackets and 3 teams in our Upper bracket all contending for a chance to represent our university at the regional stage. Through blood, sweat and definitely stacks of tears, our clear winners emerged with Size Shape Gang (formerly Team Okay) and Puffy Penguins as the UNSW representatives for the Upper and Lower divisions respectively.

Upper Division Winners "Size Shape Gang": bob36, Chrisjrdb, L8S, Koi, Hoshizora

Upper Division Winners "Size Shape Gang": bob36, Chrisjrdb, L8S, Koi, Hoshizora

Lower Division Winner "Puffy Penguins": intellect, trapizi, mousy rat, mrdensetsu, eatpies

Lower Division Winner "Puffy Penguins": intellect, trapizi, mousy rat, mrdensetsu, eatpies

However, we do congratulate The Glenn Greenwald Appreciation Society as our Lower division Runner Up and the Firetruck Friends as our Upper division Runner Up for their commendable efforts as well as all the teams who participated.

Upper Division Runner Up "Firetruck Friends": BaigoX, SKfusion, Slephnyr, Stalin, Deku

Upper Division Runner Up "Firetruck Friends": BaigoX, SKfusion, Slephnyr, Stalin, Deku

Lower Division Runner Up "Glenn Greenwald Appreciation Society": manbones2, Dugtrio, RhetoriKal, Kugeku, Teesang

Lower Division Runner Up "Glenn Greenwald Appreciation Society": manbones2, Dugtrio, RhetoriKal, Kugeku, Teesang

Throughout April, our two teams entered Regionals and competed hard against the other winners from universities throughout NSW. Unfortunately, our Lower bracket representative, Puffy Penguins, did not make it onward to Nationals but their determination and hardwork throughout the tournament must be respected and congratulated upon. On the other hand, Size Shape Gang without any doubt demonstrated that they were capable of representing the university at a national level faster than someone could type 'gg easy'.

The format of the National stage was a Round Robin tournament into Single Elimination and Size Shape Gang were set to contest against Queensland University of Technology, University of Western Australia, University of Auckland and University of Queensland. Unfortunately, we were unable to advance to the Grand Finals of Nationals but the players should be proud of themselves in representing UNSW and UNSW LoLSoc at a National level to be one of the Top 5 collegiate teams and hopefully the loss this time will add resolve to win the title for next time!

Overall, the OUC allows the talent and skill of University players from the Oceania region to be showcased. This opportunity affirms that despite not being on a competitive Esports level, the skills of teamwork and camaraderie that are echoed enforce the importance of teamwork that League of Legends focuses on and promotes. Whilst this may mark the end of this series, prepare yourselves for our Semester Tournament which is quickly approaching to hone your skills for the next Championship to come!

It was delightful seeing familiar faces of our members and many definitely did not want to Be Behind Queue for the FREE food!

We hope you all enjoyed the free sausage sizzle and of course the complementary Red Bull to get everyone back in the game...of uni of course.

[EVENT RECAP] SEMESTER 1 CASUAL LAN 2016

[Event Recap] SEMESTER 1 CASUAL LAN 2016

March 16, 2016

To help everyone relax from the hectic first two weeks back from uni, we held our first Casual LAN of the year at Wang Yu Cafe. Thank you to everyone who RSVP-ed to our event on time and came for a chill day of League. Hopefully by now, the faces of the LoLSoc team are familiar to you all, and we do hope that throughout the rest of the year you can get to know us even better!

Whilst the day was mainly about our members joining up and meeting each other on the Rift, we had to bring out the competitive side out of everyone as we held a 1 v 1 between the LoLSoc team and the members. In order to win a official Riot Bilgewater coin set, participants had to win against three of our execs or directors consecutively in a 1 v 1. For some, it was great to hear that you enjoyed being able to play in a 1 v 1 without the pressure of a competitive tournament but for others it was 'go hard or go home'. A big congratulations goes to our lucky two winners Lance Palpal-latoc and Johnathan Seggie, for winning all three of their matches using their skills (and maybe even luck). Hopefully, for those that did not get the participate in this new contest that we coined, you'll be able to at our next events.

Although this semester is going by quickly, we still have many more events planned for you all so don't worry about not being able to see us anytime soon. Next Thursday on the 24th of March, we'll be holding a BBQ at UNSW so come by, grab some free food and come chat with us. Also don't forget we have our weekly Friendly Fridays if you need a team to play with or are just looking to play some friendly games with other members or the LoLSoc team. To keep updated with the society and all of our future events, please 'Like' our Facebook page.

[Event Recap] Launch Party 2016

[Event Recap] Launch Party 2016

March 10, 2016

After an amazing O-Week, we invited you all to our first and biggest event of the year, our Launch Party! We welcomed new and returning members to join us for an exciting night of trivia and giveaways. Firstly, we would like to share a massive thanks to everyone who came and braved the long queue time. We hope you all had a lot of fun during the night as you leagued with other members to form a team during the icebreakers and then worked together using your brains and 'braum' during the trivia.

To start the ball rolling at the beginning, we asked you all to participate in an icebreaker that we had planned. Members had to find 4 other players that fit certain criteria to form a team to carry each other through our tough trivia. We had the unlikely combo of Anivia and Brand mains working together and ranked players finding some time to chill with ARAM fanatics.

But all was at stake for the trivia.

The name of Lucian's wife? Who was Soraka tricked by? A champion that can toggle their walk animation? Our mind-boggling trivia had members looking despairingly at our execs and directors for any hints at all to help them as a few even began to doubt their 'so-called' expertise at the game. People racked their brains for each of the 22 questions, and whilst some teams surrendered at 20, some strong teams made it to the end and we applaud them for their determination.

Some confused faces during our trivia

Some confused faces during our trivia

As our directors were busily marking the trivia, we played a game of 'Which Champion Am I?" Similar to celebrity heads, a lucky member was chosen by raffle to attempt to guess which champion they were with help from the audience. There were many eager hands that were raised in the air as members tried to help each other out with some clues being a lot more helpful than others.

During the course of the night, we also held a Doodle Competition where members could submit a piece of artwork to be be judged by Joy, our creative director. We had some talented and interestingly creative entries but unfortunately we could only pick out 5 winners so congratulations to Melinda Yan, Kaedan Wu, Jenny Shi, Rex Ly and Glen Lauw for showcasing their talents!

Once again, our generous sponsors Gigabyte were present to supply us with some awesome raffle prizes including the GTX950 gfx card and the XM300 gaming mouse. The GTX950 Xtreme Gaming card from Gigabyte is the perfect graphics card for MOBA gamers. Optimised for MOBA games, the GTX950 Xtreme Gaming card brings reduced latency for hyper responsiveness. With 1080p full HD gaming at 60fps, you will never miss a moment. In addition, the XM300 is the first gaming mouse from the XTREME GAMING series product line. Powered by the advanced optical engine, the XM300 is a perfect gaming weapon with pinpoint precision. The wired mouse boasts incredible click response with the top-quality micro switches, customisable RGB lighting and a clean, streamlined profile to meet the needs that gamers crave for the most.

These two prizes were respectively won by the very lucky Taiyue Tao and Simon Yuan. Congratulations to both!

From the LoLSoc team, we hope that everyone who came enjoyed the night and made some new friends especially during the icebreaker and had a chance to talk with the us. However, worry not if you didn’t because there will be many other chances throughout the year in which you can do so. This includes our Casual LAN being held this Sunday at Wang Yu or even our Friendly Fridays which start this week! We won't be forgetting any of you so keep updated with us on our Facebook so that we can see you guys soon!

Congratulations to all our prize winners!

  • Gigabyte Raffle: Taiyue Tan
  • General Raffle: JianYu Wang, Simon Yuan and Zhihui Zhang

[Event Recap] O-Week 2016

March 1, 2016

Under the blazing sun present throughout the entirety of O-Week, crowds gathered at the UNSW LoLSoc stall eager to signup. We saw many familiar faces of loyal members as well as new ones eager to join the LoLSoc family. Whilst the casual LANs allowed for members to relax and enjoy meeting fellow players, the 1v1 saw the showdown between 32 players, confident in their skills and eager to prove that they were the best. Our Scavenger Hunt pushed our members to the limits, testing both knowledge and endurance as they battled around campus to claim victory

From the LoLSoc team we would like to thank everyone who participated in our O-Week events and came to sign-up and say hello (despite the sweltering heat)! It was wonderful seeing so many familiar faces but also exciting to see all the new signups as well. In case you missed any days of O-Week, here's a recap of all our events throughout the week:

12764454_1056004227800720_3193775750141993138_o.jpg

MONDAY – Day 1

On Monday we all braced the heat as we saw our busiest day of signups. The crowds brought a thrilling atmosphere to our very first day of O-Week. Whether it was new members signing up for their very first society at uni or loyal members returning for another exciting year, no one was disappointed to be presented with a goodie bag or the shiny membership cards that were debuted. A mixture of emotions was also seen as with each signup, the members had their destiny tested by drawing a card from a Twisted Fate deck. If they were lucky enough to draw the sole gold card from the deck, an official figurine from Riot was theirs to claim. In order to allow everyone to settle in, we held a casual LAN where members were free to come and play a few matches or ask advice from our challenger players Nick "Stealthix" and Alex "Cawn Cob".

Some of our lucky figurine winners!

TUESDAY – Day 2

(GET BRIXED!)

Tuesday was all about the 1v1 tournament as everyone was hyped to watch the participants battle it out to win a Gigabyte Brix PC. The players tested their skills in a best of one where victory was decided through either first blood, first tower, or first to slay 100 minions. The crowd was kept entertained and on their feet by our caster Ross "Roscosity". Though many tried their luck with assassins and mages, marksmans saw the most victories with their high range and trading potential, with Jhin topping the list with his sublime plays. The final showdown was between Alex “Cawn Cob” and Eddie “monsterisme”, playing Miss Fortune and Teemo respectively. However, in the end Alex “cobbed” the win with first blood and took home the Gigabyte Brix PC. Although Eddie came second, the Rammus keychain was more than “OK”. As the tournament was a success for Alex “Cawn Cob” who claimed that is was “easy peasy” , it was a great success for everyone else too, whether it was watching the nail biting plays or even having the chance to test out your skills.

Smiles from the audience as they watch the matches live!

Congratulations Alex "Cawn Cob" for winning the Gigabyte Brix PC

WEDNESDAY – Day 3

On Wednesday we held a PC Building Workshop in collaboration with UNSW Computer Enthusiasts Society (PCSoc). It was great to see the event was packed with high attendance from both societies. The event was a chance for everyone to learn a little more about computing tech whether or not you had previous knowledge. Our sponsor Gigabyte was present to explain more about their Xtreme Gaming technology and also generously give out $2000 worth of prizes which was definitely the highlight for many.

A bunch of amazing prizes that were won

THURSDAY – Day 4

On the hottest day of the week with temperatures reaching 40 degrees, we tested the determination of our members with a Scavenger Hunt. Contestants entered in teams or by themselves and were given a map of checkpoints. Awaiting at each checkpoint was a challenge ranging from creative impersonations of a champion to mind bending League trivia. For some teams, the event was too hot to handle and they did not make it to end but a massive congratulations go to our winners Lizzy and Chris who planned out their win with both challenger level strategy and mechanics.

Our winners are as happy as a Poro

FRIDAY – Day 5

Congratulations Kaedan!

Congratulations Kaedan!

Friday finally rolled around, but despite it being the last day of O Week, our sign ups remained high. A casual LAN was held once again allowing a lucky handful of people to learn a few tips and tricks to up their game. A few also took the day as the last chance to win a figurine as we finished the week with a victory.Congratulations to Kaedan who was our lucky winner of the Social Media Competition running throughout the whole week! Once again, a big thank you to everyone who came by as the large numbers of members we gained this year shows us your support which is what makes this society possible.

Congratulations to all our prize winners throughout the week!
